Artificial Reasoning for Exploration and Space (ARES)

Provide embedded intelligence software for remote exploration platforms such as spacecraft, ground robots, UAVs, and ocean explorers.
  • Use on-board artificial reasoning techniques to:
    • Characterize the environment around the vehicle.
    • Reduce resource use by “smartly” using resource-intensive instruments.
    • Reduce communications demands between an exploration vehicle and base stations by only sending “important” information.
    • Adapt reasoning to platform conditions
      • example tumbling satellite or instrument issues
  • Supplement on-board systems with ground support:
    • Pre-mission training
    • In-mission joint reasoning
    • Post-mission analysis
